There are makeup brands and then there are makeup brands for black women. There are 5 makeup brands black women should try, gone are the days where black women especially dark skin women were unable to find makeup to fit their complexion. Makeup is one of those things where one size doesn’t fit all and everyone’s beauty should be highlighted.
Everyone has different skin hues and as such, which makes buying makeup a daunting task. The makeup selection for black women were not practical as the shades were incorrect, or there just wasn’t enough options. This might have sounded like something you read about in the 1920’s but sad to say this was as recent as 2016.
What happened? On September 8, 2017, a singer changed the game. Thanks to Robyn Fenty, she changed how cosmetic company market and sell their makeup. Never has there been such an exclusive brand, that offered over forty shades of foundation to other products that is geared towards black women. This launch shook the beauty industry and forced every beauty brand out there to reevaluate their brand.
This was the best time for black women especially dark skinned women, their voices were being heard especially when it came to cosmetics. This is how change occurs, when certain needs aren’t being met, it’s up to us to create that product that will enforce change.
What makeup brands are for black women?
There are makeup companies that do their best trying to be inclusive but still haven’t quit gotten it right. This is such a taboo subject which still has such controversy in 2022, but there are still issues the it comes to black women finding makeup the suits their skin tone. There are brands that have done this impeccably and have been serving black women for the past couple of years.
When it comes to assessing the best make brands for black women, there are a few factors that we need to consider, is the brand inclusive? How many shades does the company offer? What kind of products are offered? These are a few things to consider when shopping with a company but also what their vision is for their customers.
When compiling this list of makeup brands for black women, there were a few things I looked at such as the shade range offered, reviews, price and quality. A little goes a long way which means that every dollar you spend matters and as such whatever you pay for should have some worth or value when it comes to spending.
Fenty Beauty
Fenty beauty was launched in 2017 by singer Rihanna, when this beauty brand hit the market it took the world by storm. It open a market for the underserved which were black women, especially women of darker skin tones. I remember when this dropped and many beauty company came out the woodwork stating they had products for black women, however it was just two shades darker than before.
Fenty beauty have over 40 shades of foundation and concealer which ranges from the lightest shade to the darkest. This was something black women needed as it was cosmetics created by a black women for black women, which takes out a lot of the guess work when trying to figure out if it is for you. Majority of the products are vegan and cruelty-free, which is something a lot of people have been interested in.
Beauty Bakery
Beauty Bakerie was founded by Cashmere Nicole in 2011. She founded this company out of passion that would grow into something more than what it is today. The company does cater to the needs of black women and looking at their shade range from medium brown to dark brown. I have known about this brand for a while and loved their presentation.
The use of a bakery design to catch the eye of the buyers is such a genius idea not to mention the products are affordable, cruelty-free and suits black women. This is one brand that have been around for a while and have branched out into skincare which also cater to black women. Like Fenty Beauty, Beauty Bakerie is a must have for any black woman.
Juvias Place
Juvia’s Place was founded in 2016 inspired by Queen Nefertiti, this African inspired packaging is the first thing that caught the eye of most people. With it’s vibrant colors and multitude of rich shades, this made Juvia’s Place a stable for a lot of black women, I personally like it because it offers so much different shade of products at affordable prices. With Juvia’s Place you will get a good bang for your buck.
Rare Beauty
This one might be a shocker, but I actually thing Rare Beauty is a very good brand. I am not the biggest supporter of celebrities who venture into beauty as I do believe it is more of a cash grab than a true business venture. Then again there is nothing wrong with venturing into new territory as everyone has a right to do what they want.
Rare Beauty has hit me by surprise like Fenty Beauty have over 40 shades of foundation and concealers, which is an amazing thing for black women. The products are affordable and offer a wide array of products to choose from. This brand created by Selena Gomez and is the newest of all the ones on this list.
Pat McGrath
Pat McGrath is a makeup artist who now owns a makeup brand. I wasn’t too familiar with her until a few years ago when her products came into Sephora. I like that her brand offer over 30 shades of foundations and concealers, this brand offers a lot of color variations for black women. The pricing is on the higher end but you will not regret buying anything, there is a lot to offer with this brand.
