When it comes to skincare, I practice minimalism. A minimalist skincare routine is one that can be done anytime. I prefer to do it at night time as this is when I am at my laziest. Is this always the case? No, but there are days where I am not interested in doing the whole fifteen step skincare routine I see celebrities doing.
Everyone has their own routine that works for them, what might work for one might not work for all. Implementing a minimalist routine is the best way to try new products but also identify what works for you. Having a minimalist skincare routine could be the first step in living a minimalist lifestyle. Every product in the routine should serve a purpose and makes a difference when doing your skincare routine.
Why is a skincare routine important at nighttime?
One would think, I do my main skincare routine in the morning, why do I need to do another one? There is a great need for both skincare routines, the daytime have different needs than that of the night time. While some products can be used for both, there is a big difference on what the needs are. There are certain steps that you must follow in order to get the best results.
A night time skincare routine helps to rejuvenate the skin not only for the end of the day but also for the next day. During the day your skin is exposed to pollution, sunlight and other environmental factors, that does damage the skin. Which is why it is important to have an effective night time skincare routine.
Which is why what you do at night affects your skin in the morning. Meaning that if you do nothing at night time then you are more than likely compensating for it when you do perform your morning skincare routine. Which is why any little you do in the evening does help a lot.
What is a minimalist skincare ?
Minimalist skincare is incorporating fewer products to just the essentials. Five steps might sound too much and isn’t as minimal as one would think but it’s more so about what you use versus what you do. Minimalist skincare has become so popular nowadays as more people are concern with finding a product that has multiple functions.
“I might not be perfect but my skincare is“
Before you start you skincare routine, you have to have the right mindset. This might sound strange but when you are focused on you and what you are doing, it makes this routine feel less of a task and more of a lifestyle incorporation. It is important to also think about the products you want to use when doing the routine, it is a great idea to research your products.
Find products that do not have a barrage of toxic ingredients, but instead majority non-toxic ingredients. Get familiar with companies who’s products you are interested in using. It is a very good idea to use a multipurpose product that can solve many problems, this is not only good for the environment but also for your pocket.
This is the time to not follow the latest trends, but to find what best works for you. I am not big on trends as I do feel that they die down, and a lot of times people advertise products they don’t use or know nothing about.
Why you should incorporate a minimalist approach to skincare?
You should take a minimal approach to skincare for one simple reason, you can overdo it. I use to be one of those people where I believe that the more products the better. This is a huge misconception that a lot of people think and I still see people do.
In fact, I have learnt that the more products you use the more likely it will be that, they intersect with each other causing clogged pored and break out. Basically it reverses the action that you are working towards preventing. An effective minimal skincare routine will give you the benefits you need.
What products do you need for a minimalist skincare?
The first thing you need is a good cleanser. By good, I mean one that is nourishing, non-striping and has load of no-toxic ingredients. It also depends on your needs, such as if your wore makeup as this would require double cleanse or adding another step to your routine. Or if you just want one shot then use an oil base cleanser that can do the job.
Glow recipe
This cleanser delivers all the antioxidant-rich benefits of blueberries. The gentle formula is packed with nourishing oils to remove makeup with minimal rubbing, while hyaluronic acid and AHAs help improve the look of pores. Skin is left clear, radiant, and glowy.
Biossance: Squalane + Elderberry Jelly Cleanser
This innovative cleanser combines antioxidant-rich elderberry, sugarcane-derived squalane, and a glow-boosting prebiotic complex to powerfully cleanse the skin without a moisture-stripping effect. The formula transforms from a gorgeous, naturally hued purple jelly to a luxuriously silky oil and cleansing milk that rinses clean.
The color in Biossance‘s Elderberry Cleanser is derived from an extract and not a synthetic colorant. Because of this, different batches of cleanser may vary in color. This color variance is normal and does not affect the performance or efficacy of the cleanser.
A gentle scrub
This might sound a bit much but trust me this was something I have incorporated and have seen a huge difference. Even though cleansers are good at moving dirt, it’s doesn’t alway get everything. This is the time to incorporate a gentle scrub that is moisturizing and not rough on the skin, this will helps to remove impurities and make the skin look more radiant.
Goopglow: Cloudberry Exfoliating Jelly Cleanser
Formulated with fruit enzymes, a physical exfoliant derived from orange peels, and Arctic cloudberry and apple for soothing hydration, this multitasking cleanser thoroughly removes impurities, leaving skin silky smooth and visibly radiant. Its innovative jelly-hybrid formula is gentle enough for everyday use.
Botanical Exfoliating Scrub
Perfect for all skin types, this invigorating scrub features finely ground seeds of the Ecuadorian ivory palm to polish and buff away dulling dead skin cells. Uneven skin tone and texture are refined as a blend of aloe, coconut, ginger, ginkgo, and green tea rejuvenates skin with a botanical boost.
You cannot forget to ice
This isn’t expensive and you can find it in your fridge. I started to incorporate this in my skincare routine, and I have seen the difference this has made. Adding pure ice to your face has many added benefits that will not only improve your skin but prevent any further issues. ring your face is exactly what it seems adding ice to your face, I tend to do this before I add any products as it does get my skin ready for the next step.
Ice is so good for the skin, it increases circulation of the blood to the surface which will rejuvenate and brighten the skin. It reduces puffiness and reduce the bags under the eyes. Rub it on your face for about 30s or more to get the best results.
Tone that skin
Toners are the next best thing, after icing your face add a toner. This will seal in all the moisture and and enhance your skin, when it comes to toners choose one that doesn’t have alcohol. You want one that will get the job done.
Fresh: Rose & Hyaluronic Acid Deep Hydration Toner
This bestselling, alcohol-free formula has an unmatched amount of rose power: toning rose fruit extract, soothing rosewater, nourishing rose oil, and real floating rose petals. It hydrates and clears skin of leftover impurities, leaving it silky soft and prepped for products you apply after.
Biossance: Squalane + BHA Pore-Minimizing Toner
The secret to this formula is raw white willow bark, a powerful source of natural BHAs with multiple benefits: skin-calming, dead-skin-dissolving, and texture-smoothing. Blended with hydrating squalane, this first-of-its-kind fusion dislodges and exfoliates away excess oil, dirt, and debris while also quenching skin. It’s made to balance the oiliest skin types without dehydrating the driest, and leaves skin feeling refreshed and ready for the rest of your routine.
Moisturize
This is normally the last step in any skincare routine, nighttime needs are different from day time needs. Nighttime I like to apply a water cream, while during the day I like to apply one that has SPF. Depending on your skin type this is how you will decide on the moisturizer to get, like the other products you also want to get products that have majority non-toxic ingredients.
La Mer: The Moisturizing Soft Cream Moisturizer
This lighter-weight cream delivers moisture into the skin’s surface helping to heal dryness. Skin-supporting Miracle Broth™ helps protect from environmental stressors. Skin appears more vibrant and radiant upon application and looks visibly smoother and softer over time.
Peter Thomas Roth: Water Drench Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer
